This capstone course is designed to allow for students to follow their own research interests and passions in cinema and media studies. The result of this course will be a research paper roughly 15 pages in length on a topic of the student’s choosing, following the research methods and theoretical frameworks previously studied in their career as a CMS student, introduced in this course, or discovered during the process of research and writing. Students should see this course as an opportunity to research a subject area of their own choosing and write an in-depth examination of that topic while guided by an expert.
Almost half the readings are drawn from previous CMS course offerings of the past four years, the rest are new to the course. Each student will likely be familiar with one or more of the readings. Therefore, this course will build upon previous student knowledge and put the various methods, theories, and approaches to a wide range of cinema and media topics in conversation with each other. As such, this capstone is synthetic, analytic, and exploratory.
