An overview of the development of cinema in Latin America, from the silent epics and melodramas of the 1930s, through the ‘Golden Age’ of studio cinema in the 1940s and 1950s, to the militant New Latin American Cinema movement of the 1960s, and on to the most recent boom in Latin American cinema since 2000. We will watch two films a week, from Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, and Peru, most of them on Canvas. You will keep a film viewing and reading journal, give an oral presentation, and write two short comparative essays, in addition to participating actively in class discussions.

Text: Paul A. Schroeder, Latin American Cinema: A Comparative History. Berkeley: U of California Press, 2016. ISBN 970-0520-28863-8; plus critical essays posted to Canvas. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU HAVE FREE ACCESS TO THIS E-BOOK THROUGH THE UW LIBRARIES CATALOG.
