HUMAN RIGHTS IN LITERATURE OF THE AMERICAS

Following the extensive human rights abuses in Latin America during the 1970s and 1980s, Latin American artists and intellectuals have struggled to address the emerging relations between democracy, liberalism, and human rights. How has human rights discourse evolved over the past three decades, in fiction, art and film from various Latin American nations and the US? We will examine this through readings of five short novels from Mexico, Argentina, Peru and El Salvador/Guatemala, photographs by Quechua artist Martín Chambi, and a US art exhibit on the Disappeared in Latin America. We will also analyze five pertinent films and five critical essays. You will keep a reading and film viewing journal and write two 4-6-page comparative essays, in addition to participating actively in class discussions.

Please write between one and two pages, typed, double-spaced, on each of the assigned readings and films; see the complete list under “Assignments: Journal.” Please number your entries and follow the order given in the list. In the case of the films, in your entry you should respond to one or two of the questions included on the list of film questions, which are posted under “Files.” Please submit the two halves of your journal through Canvas on the dates indicated below.

Analytical Essays:

You will write two 4-6-page analytical essays, including a list of works consulted, and incorporating discussion of the films and readings studied in class. Each essay should compare and contrast a theme or problem in two of the novels we have studied in class. Please see the topics and detailed instructions posted under “Assignments.” Please submit your essays through Canvas.
